I could not have visited Guinea nor have wanted to help the Guineans without hoping that my compatriots would know them too. So during my first trip, I purposely took pictures and brought back material to illlustrate as best as I could the way these residents of West Africa live.
Since May of 1998, I have met with different social groups and students from both elementary and secondary schools to teach others of the socioeconomic reality of Guinea. The content and the length of my interventions varied according to the needs and interests of the participants from informal story telling to lectures on the socioeconomic situation of Guinea.
To date, I have enjoyed meeting over 30,000 people, most of them students. I have given conferences in the Laurentians, in Montreal, on the South Shore and in the Nicolet and Bécancour regions.
As a direct consequence of these efforts, four different schools have raised the funds needed to sponsor many Guinean children by going “trick or treat” at Halloween for the benefit of Partage Québec-Guinée. More than once, I received money that students or student groups had raised by organizing different activities on their own initiative. To me, their intention was far more important than the money raised.
