SPONSORSHIP |
| |
|
| |
It all started by accident. It is the story of a young girl named Sylvie Bavogui whose father passed away during the Liberian war. In Africa, a child belongs to the father or the father’s family. The mother wants Sylvie to live with her but she has no rights over her daughter. In 2000, during my third trip, I am told about the problem. I suggest without conviction: “What about sending Sylvie to a private school”? It is only the beginning of a great adventure. I then decide to take charge of Sylvie and send her to a private school. In return, Sylvie moves in with her mother.
A Secondary I teacher took the initiative to ask students to club together to help Sylvie. Now, every year, I give speeches about Guinea and Sylvie to Secondary I groups and, in exchange, Cégep de Saint-Jérôme has become Sylvie’s new sponsor.
Since then, the sponsors have diversified and they are now taking care of 28 children and teenagers most of them father-orphaned. We ask $400 per year (tax deductible) at the elementary or secondary level. This amount includes school fees and materials, meals, etc. We also help four university students at the cost of $100 per year.

Another touching story
In 2005, during my last trip, a 12-year old neighbor full of life but uneducated, Mariama Sadio, visits us and eats with us most of the time. She is father-orphaned and her mother being blind, she must help her. Cellou, her younger brother, goes to the local elementary school but food is scarce and their house, if you can call this a house, is a 9 ft. x 5 ft. shack with a leaking sheet metal roof.
On my return to Quebec, I stop in France to visit relatives and I find a sponsor for Cellou. The next day, I call Conakry and Cellou starts attending a private school proudly wearing a new uniform. As far as his older sister Mariama is concerned, I have no idea what to do for her because she is too old to start elementary school. Once back in Quebec, I call Guinea and ask if Mariama would be interested in taking a sewing course. The answer is yes. With the help of three persons, I collect $350 so Mariama can take her sewing course and it leaves her with enough money to buy a pedal sewing machine (Made in China).
Mariama can now earn a living and help her family. She has no obligation to enter into a premature marriage which is young African girls’ greatest fear.

THANK YOU TO OUR MEMBERS |
| |
|
| |
Each year, our members show their support by sending us their contribution in exchange for their membership. The suggested fee is $20 per year but, on average, we receive about $30 per person. The generosity and trust of the members in our mission for the people of Guinea is very touching and much appreciated. If you would like to join them, we invite you to fill out the form on the next page.
